First Responders Appreciation Week

A Week-Long Celebration of Service Across the Triad

First Responders Appreciation Week is a dedicated annual campaign honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders throughout the Triad region—spanning Greensboro, Winston‑Salem, High Point, and parts of Virginia and South Carolina. During this week, communities across North Carolina often observe September as “First Responders Appreciation Month,” with special events concentrated in one celebratory week centered around recognition and gratitude.

This initiative highlights the everyday heroes among us—police officers, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, and rescue volunteers—bringing communities together to say, “thank you.”

What Happens During Appreciation Week

Community Parades and Displays

Many towns host parades or first responder vehicle exhibitions where fire trucks, K9 units, ambulances, and police cruisers are on display. Local Chambers and community groups often organize family-friendly “First Responder Appreciation Breakfasts,” like the one held in Apex, NC, featuring food, awards, and equipment showcases.

Thank‑You Card Drives and Donation Booths

Schools, civic groups, and local businesses run card‑making campaigns where residents write thank-you notes to first responders. Donation booths collect supplies—water, snacks, and gear—for responders. Discounts and freebies are often offered in partnership with local shops.

Partner Discounts and Business Support

Local businesses provide promotional offers during the week—free or discounted meals, services, or goods for first responders. These gestures reinforce local appreciation and strengthen ties between responders and the community.

Real Triad-Area Recognition Events

Apex Chamber Appreciation Breakfast (Apex, NC)

On September 18, the Apex Chamber held an invite-only morning gala at The Depot, complete with breakfast, equipment distribution, and sponsor recognition for local police and fire departments Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce.

Greensboro and Winston‑Salem Observations

Greensboro City Council and local government frequently issue proclamations honoring awareness weeks and organizing appreciation activities, similar to proclamations issued during National Police Week and EMS Week to honor public safety professionals.

Piedmont Triad “Salute to Heroes” (Red Cross)

The American Red Cross Piedmont Triad event in Winston‑Salem in September honors local heroes in categories such as EMS, law enforcement, fire service, and more. Community nominations and public recognition ceremonies spotlight outstanding responders in our region.

Community-Centered Benefits

This program promotes:

  • Visibility and acknowledgment: Bringing first responders out into the public spotlight highlights their service and inspires local pride.
  • Connection and outreach: Card drives and school involvement deepen community engagement.
  • Support for responder families: Some events raise funds to support families after injury or loss.

How You Can Participate

  • Attend or Volunteer: Join local breakfast gatherings, parades, vehicle displays, or school-led appreciation projects in your town during September.
  • Host a card drive: Schools or businesses can coordinate note-writing campaigns to support responders.
  • Nominate a hero: Programs like the Red Cross “Salute to Heroes” accept nominations across emergency service categories, strictly for residents in Alamance, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, and surrounding counties.
  • Sponsor or offer discounts: Businesses can support first responders by offering special deals or sponsoring appreciation events.

Through First Responders Appreciation Week, we ensure our community sees and values the work of those who protect us daily. It’s more than words—it’s a week of concrete actions that say, “We see you, we thank you, we stand with you.”
